Nicaragua Snapshot - coffee is one of the largest sources of rural employment and accounts for over 15 percent of exports. La Roya is an insidious orange fungus that has wreaked havoc across Central Americas coffee farms - withering leaves, chocking coffee berries and turning lush verdant slopes into barren landscapes.

In 2013 an innovative model for providing affordable, long-term financing and technical assistance was offered to coffee farmers so they could renovate their farms to eradicate La Roya. The varietal Marsellesa is a rust resistant hybrid of the Caturra and Sarchimor varieties and is valued for its high yield and superior cup.
